General Class Information...
Notice: Please read offering carefully. Unless otherwise noted, quilt class fees do not include supplies. Paid registrants will receive a copy of the supply list with class confirmation. If you have not received confirmation and supply list one week prior to the class date, please call Rachel at 800.590.9755. Project samples are on display in the classroom area (as well as our website). Supplies may be purchased at Threads of Tradition located in Sauder Village. For your convenience, five Bernina sewing machines are available for student use in class. Please indicate on the registration form if you would like to reserve one of these machines (limited to availability).
 

  Quilter Skill Level Definitions

 • A Beginner is eager to learn and can sew a fairly straight line with a sewing machine.

• You are an Advanced Beginner if you know how to thread the sewing machine, wind a bobbin and use a rotary cutter. You can sew simple pieced designs and simple appliqué. Blocks may come out different sizes or odd-shaped.

• You are an Intermediate quilter if you have been quilting for several years, have taken several quilting classes, and are having more success with piecing skills. You are learning the finer points of pressing, cutting and adjusting seam allowances for more accuracy. You are trying more challenging patterns and designs.

• You are an Advanced quilter if you have mastered all the basic skills. You have begun designing your own quilt blocks and patterns, combining designs from various sources, and learning more advanced techniques to enhance your work.

Pinwheels Then and Now was inspired by an unknown quilter who added a unique triangle inner border to a classic scrappy pinwheel design and then added a large print border to make her circa 1840 quilt. Finished size is 74” x 74”.

Get acquainted with the forge, anvil, and other tools of the trade and start making useful hand-wrought items. At each session, you’ll be able to work on improving your skills.  You don’t need to attend all five sessions – register for as many as you want from one to all five! The more you come, the more you’ll learn. Safety notes:  Please do not wear synthetic clothing or footwear as these can melt. Closed toe footwear is recommended.  Safety gear will be provided.  If you have blacksmithing tools, you may want to bring  a favorite hammer or pair of tongs; otherwise tools will be provided in class for you to use.

Learn to knit in the Continental method, sometimes referred to as German knitting or Picking Knitting. This method of knitting requires that working yarn be held in the left hand and remain stationary as the right needle is used to do most of the work or ‘picking’ up of stitches, resulting in a smoother, faster process of knitting. Both the Continental knit and purl stitch will be taught in class.

Soap Making

Must have taken the Beginning Homemade Soaps class or have prior cold process soapmaking experience.

In this class we will discuss highs and lows of soapmaking on your own and answer questions you have had.  New techniques we will cover include layering of two colors/scents of soap, swirling/marbling of soap using 2 plus colors, embedding soap with shapes and more.  We’ll try the “heat exchange method” of soaping, too as well as discuss hot process soapmaking. Students will leave the class with 2 bars of soap (or they can pay for 2 bars of the soap they made to be shipped to them).  Please wear long sleeved shirts and clothes that are ok with spills.  Eye protection, gloves provided.  Class is observe AND/or create depending on your comfort level.

Do you enjoy using hand made soap sold in boutiques?  Here is your opportunity to learn the basics to create awesome vegetable based natural herbal soaps from scratch!  Due to the nature of making soap from scratch, this class is mainly demonstration but you’ll leave with very thorough handouts and enough information to make soaps at home from start to finish. Plus each participant will get two bars of Abundance Soaps wonderful creations!  Note: You’ll want to wear comfortable clothes that can get messy.

This memorable experience will give you the opportunity to work with internationally acclaimed glass artist Mark Matthews to create your own ornament or flower.  You’ll get to select the colors for your piece, help Mark turn the molten glass into your own artwork and get an ‘up close’ chance to learn more about glass making.  Please indicate on your registration form date, time and if you would like a flower or an ornament.  Because the pieces will need to go through a cooling process, arrangements will be made at the time of the class to pick up your piece later or have it shipped.

Finely chopped meats mixed with savory ingredients and baked alone or stuffed into peppers, cabbage leaves, or other vegetables and topped with robust sauces make a hearty entrée. Learn to combine ingredients and cooking techniques that result in a moist, flavorful meatloaf every time! We will bake in an oven and try a fabulous microwave recipe as well.

We will make monkey bread (pull-apart cinnamon rolls with nuts) with recipes from scratch and using frozen bread dough. Each child/adult grouping will take home a yummy monkey bread.

Quick breads are leavened with baking powder and baking soda, often mixed with fruits and nuts and are quick to mix, bake and serve to your family. We will try different recipes and each person will take home two loaves.


Jams and Jellies

Make three different jams and jellies using cooked and frozen methods of preparation. Each person will take home three jars of jam and jelly made by the class that day besides sampling our creations.

Looking for a fun and unique experience to share with friends or family? Get together 4 or more of your friends and register for one of the cooking classes listed below. Class Registration Information...

Please register early as classes fill quickly. All classes require pre-registration and pre-payment along with the registration form. We reserve the right to cancel classes if we do not meet minimum registrations. In the event we need to cancel a class, your registration and supply money will be refunded. 

Any cancellation made more than two weeks prior to the class will receive their class fee refunded minus a 20% processing fee (minimum $2.00). Cancellations made after the cancellation date and no shows the day of the class will not receive a refund.

All registrants will receive written confirmation, additional information and supplies list.

Members must include the name on their current membership card and expiration date. Volunteers, Junior Historians and Employees of Sauder Village qualify for members’ rates. For more information on any of our classes call call 800.590.9755 and ask for Rachel.
